Hey Rebels! It’s been a while since my last Get Skilled 101 post. Since we’ve just entered the month of December (the last month of the year), I decided I would do a more detailed post on goal setting as we start to reflect about how our year has been and what we hope to achieve in the new year ahead.

“If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin

Despite many of our plans getting derailed because of the uncertain past 2 years, having a plan (or many plans, including your backup plan A, B, C, etc.) gives you that starting edge. Without a plan, you may feel lost and unsure of what to do next. Fret not if that’s how you feel now. Through this post, I do hope you learn a thing or two about goal setting! While it may not be in all our nature to plan, I highly encourage you to take time to make plans and start setting goals today!

If you missed it or need a recap, do check out my post on Time Management. While I may have mentioned SMART goal setting previously, I would like to dive deeper in this post to share with you on how to achieve those SMART goals. [PSST read till the end for a special treat from me]

Top 8 tips from the internet about good goal settings

Tip #1: Goals must be SMART

I’ve been emphasising over and over in this post but it is definitely the first step you need to take to ensure that you will have a higher chance of achieving your goal! For a quick check to see if your goal is SMART enough, read through your goal (or better yet, get someone else to do it) and see if it is easily understood.

Tip #2: Learn from past failures and success stories

When creating your goals, understand what works or what does not work for you. Ultimately, you want to be able to achieve whatever goal you set out to do. Tap on your strengths when setting goals for a better chance of succeeding! Learn from others’ mistakes as well so that you don’t have to spend too much trying something that will likely lead to failure. The opposite holds true as well, learn from success stories on how someone managed to achieve a similar goal to yours. It’ll make it easier for you to follow in someone else’s footsteps.

Tip #3: Identify the purpose of your goal

There is definitely a purpose in everything you do or you want to do. When you set your goals, there has to be a reason why you want to achieve a certain goal. It could be to lead a healthier lifestyle or even something simple as attempting to drink 8 glasses of water a day. All these have benefits for our physical health and not doing them may lead to health complications. Take some time to reflect and think about the driving purpose of your goal as this would be your motivating factor to really achieve it.

Tip #4: Get those obstacles out of the way

Start by listing obstacles you foresee that may get in your way. Next, think of how you can overcome them. Once you put your mind to it, there is definitely nothing that can stand in your way!

Tip #5: Do it like you mean it

Don’t just write goals without taking any actions. If you say you’re going to do it, then just do it! Find the most effective solution for yourself and identify actions that you need (and are willing) to take to achieve your goals. Don’t forget to give yourself deadlines/milestones to see if you’re on track!

Tip #6: Find your BUDDY

Sometimes it may feel tough being on this journey by yourself. Grab a buddy, share with them about your goals and get them to understand why these goals are important to you. If they can understand what these goals mean to you, they will likely be your pillar of support. They will also hold you accountable for ensuring your goals are met!

Tip #7: Revisit your goals and celebrate achievements

Revisit your goals frequently and check if you’re on the right track towards achieving what you want. Give yourself that motivation and confidence boost when you actually achieve certain milestones. Don’t forget to give yourselves a pat on the back for that! Don’t fret if you feel like you’ve been lagging behind, this is a great chance for you to get yourself together and work harder towards achieving your goals.

Tip #8: Get distractions away

I know sometimes we may find ourselves getting distracted from our original goals. Be sure to remind yourself of your purpose and have the will to say no to distractions.
