Born out of Member discussion and questions, the Rebel Federation is releasing a major policy update regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an organization practice.

Rebel Federation Artificial Intelligence Policy

With Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) rapidly gaining precedence in society, concerns and debates regarding its use have become common. The Rebel Federation (“RF”) acknowledges that AI may be seen as a useful tool in certain situations, taking workload off of human beings and thus allowing them more freedom for fun or creative tasks. AI has, to some extent, been present in our lives far longer than most of us realize, but recent discussions regarding AI have mostly revolved around Generative AI (“Gen AI”) and Large Languages Models (“LLMs”). Those against these forms of AI argue that its use causes damage to the environment through excessive use of water and energy, unfairly uses human-made art and other content without consent or compensation, diminishes critical thinking skills, and provides an easy way to create and spread misinformation. In creating this policy, the Rebel Federation staff listened to all sides and is committed to continuing to learn and grow. We aim to work through all policies with intention, weighing the ethics and costs before making an official statement. Our goal is not to demonize the use of AI in general, but rather to establish guidelines for the proper use of AI tools within the Rebel Federation and its Divisions.

Policy

  • As an organization, the Rebel Federation does not endorse, promote, or encourage the use of Generative AI/LLMs as a default or preferred method of engaging within our community in any form. Where reasonably practical, RF prefers creative work to be conceived, created, and completed by people rather than generated by Gen AI/LLMs.
  • Division Policy
    • Our Division(s) retain the right to create, modify, remove, and/or execute their own policy regarding Gen AI/LLMs.  However, members should not be required to use Gen AI/LLMs to participate in division activities or complete Division staff duties.
    • Should a Division(s) utilize Gen AI/LLMs in their content at the staff level or in their official Division communication/product, they must be transparent about their policy by posting their policy or disclosure in their public Division server where it is easily accessible and referenceable by Members, such as in a dedicated public channel, or listed in the server Rules or About Us (and the like). Posting on their Division website and fostering open discussion related to the subject is also encouraged.
  • Rebel Federation Main Hub Policy
    • In the RF Main Hub (“Hub”) and within Hub teams, staff may not utilize Gen AI/LLMs for creative work produced or published for RF.
    • In the RF Main Hub, Members may not post content produced by Gen AI/LLMs in any creative channel(s), including, but not limited to, Art channel(s).
    • Any content produced with the assistance of Gen AI/LLMs and posted to non-creative channel(s) and/or other Hub-associated projects must be labeled as Gen AI/LLM content.
    • This policy extends to all RF resources, including, but not limited to, Hub-managed Division resources such as Division websites.

Graphics Policy

  • Official Rebel Federation Graphics will never be created with the use of Gen AI/LLMs.
    • RF Staff who create graphics on behalf of the Rebel Federation may not use Gen AI/LLMs in work associated with RF. Minor editing or review of AI-generated material does not, by itself, make the resulting work human-created for purposes of this policy.
  • The Rebel Federation name, logo, and other IP may not be associated with or attached to an image created with the assistance of Gen AI/LLMs, including, but not limited to, server icons and banners and other official Division graphics.
  • Any work found to have been created with the assistance of Gen AI/LLMs on behalf of RF or otherwise associated with the RF name, logo, and other IP will be removed and responded to as deemed fit by Administration.

Rebel Federation AI Use Disclosure

  • In the RF Hub server, Commando717 developed a bot based off of the open-source DeepSeek model to assist in server and project operations.
  • This bot runs locally and only when prompted by Commando.
  • Currently, this bot is not in use. It may be brought into use in the future for strictly non-creative purposes and only with the consideration and approval of Administration.

The Rebel Federation acknowledges that there is a wide spectrum of beliefs and values concerning the use of Generative AI. The purpose of this policy is not to draw dividing lines within our community, but to set a standard for professional action as a team. We encourage differences in thought and respect that Members may hold opposing viewpoints. With such differences, we encourage Members to research the impacts and potential uses of tools including Gen AI/LLMs as they form their ethical stance. Polite dissent is welcome, but conversation must, as always, be born of good faith and follow the Community Rules. As a Federation, our goal is to Fight the Good Fight in everything we do.
